On the first day of the scheduled enrollment for School Year 2022-2023 which also coincided with the first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Marcos, the Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC) again called on the president to prioritize the education sector.

The group listed some of the issues that they want to hear as the President takes the stage for his first SONA this afternoon. The list includes the following:

1. Increase the salaries and benefits of teachers
2. Free the teachers from excessive clerical and administrative tasks
3. Implement the welfare provisions of Magna Carta for Public School Teachers
4. Reform the GSIS or set-up a separate insurance system for teachers
5. Provide the necessary funding for full face-to-face classes
6. Review the existing K-12 curriculum

According to the group, these are just some of the immediate solutions to the problems faced by teachers and the education sector.

The TDC also reiterated its appeal to give teachers a two-month school break before the opening of classes for the next school year.

In a previous statement, TDC said, "One clear and present danger facing teachers at the moment is over-exhaustion. And the August 22 opening of classes can only aggravate the situation as it snatches from teachers the much-needed rest after two extremely taxing school years under the pandemic. The president still has a month to reconsider, and if he moves decisively enough, one million teachers would be spared from further burnout and be able to return to work with renewed strength and enthusiasm.”

The group hopes that President Marcos will fulfill his campaign promises.
