Vice President Sara Duterte on Saturday, January 21, said she will focus on teacher benefits, growth of learners, and rehabilitation and reconstruction of school infrastructure during her term as concurrent Department of Education (DepEd) secretary.

“Tututukan natin ang mga (We will focus on) teachers, learners, at ang ating (and our) school infrastructures,” Duterte said during the awarding ceremonies of Aklan’s Ten Outstanding Mentors (ATOM) Awarding Ceremonies at the Augusto B. Legaspi Memorial Sports and Cultural Complex on Jan. 21.

Duterte said that DepEd and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) already have an “ongoing commitment” for a monthly update on the deliverables for the implementation of benefits for the teaching and non-teaching staff.

DepEd, she added, is also currently reaching out to the Department of Health (DOH) to ensure that the agency’s employees “enjoy free health check ups.”

Duterte also noted that DOH is also “very welcoming and truly receptive” about removing the cost of teachers’ check-ups from their P5,000 allowance.

“Pinapakiusapan po namin at patuloy ang pakikipag dialogo namin sa Department of Health na gawing libre ang check up ng teachers (We are asking and continuing our dialogue with the Department of Health to make the teachers’ check up free,” Duterte said.

Additionally, Duterte also said the DepEd is also reaching out to the Office of the President to provide “additional benefits to the teaching and non-teaching staff” of the agency.

For learners, Duterte said that DepEd is reviewing the K to 10 and Grades 11 to 12 curriculum to “ensure that graduates are immediately employable by sectors and industries, which was the sole purpose for the K to 12 program.”

This move, she explained, aims to address employment challenges faced by basic education graduates. “Lagi po nating sinasabi na ang mandatory lang po ay ang basic education ((We always say that the only mandatory is basic education),” Duterte said.

‘Yung mga learners na nasa atin sa Department of Education, dapat pag-graduate nila, kapag hindi na sila tumuloy sa higher education, ay pwede na silang magtrabaho (The learners that we have in the Department of Education, when they graduate and have chosen not to go on to higher education, they should be able to work),” she added.
